I know for sure he played four. Of course the guitar many times,and he played a horn of some kind when the Mayberry band went to Raleigh, and then he plucked a few notes on the piano when telling Aunt Bee about Asa's chin contraption, and then he played "What a Friend We Have in Jesus" on the farmer's organ when the church bought it.
