Speaking of Barney and Thelma Lou at their high school reunion comes at a
perfect time for me. Last night my wife and I attended an all high school
reunion for my high school which was dissolved in 1965. 289 alumni and
spouses attended which represented classes from 1934-1965.
I had just a fantastic time. I was asked to bring books along so of course
I had to wear my Barney Fife tie. They had a table set up for me so after
the dinner many old acquaintances came over to visit and I marveled at how
many of them said how they still watch Mayberry and it is their favorite all
time show. One of my wonderful childhood experiences was the constant
playing in Rau's Woods. I had mentioned that in my book introduction. Well
who should be at the reunion, but old Mr. Rau himself, a 1942 graduate. He
almost cried when he saw his name in print. Also two daughters of the
grocery story owner I mentioned were there plus others who helped me become
who I am. But best of all my old high school girlfriend showed up. I hadn't
seen her since 1966. We had a wonderful reunion which of course included
our spouses. I think she was just really controlling herself. I don't
think she wanted to break up two marriages. She really hadn't changed at all
and it brought back some wonderful memories. But it was indeed a
bittersweet night. I went with so much anticipation anxious to see all
those friends of my past as they once were only to see them as they really
are. Time has not been good to many of them with family breakups, deaths,
and poor health. I last saw one friend as a healthy vibrant 18 year old and
last night I saw him walking in with a cane and snow white hair. It really
made me stop to think how quickly time does pass us all by. And I came to
realize again why I love Mayberry so much. It is the one place where I can
go and nothing has changed.

I have two brothers who were invited, but they refused to even consider
attending. They have no special feelings for their old ala Mata. I feel
for them, as they indeed missed a very memorable and special night among
some mighty fine people from some great old days.

"The tears on my pillow speak the pain that is in my heart."

And I guarantee you all my friends, that there were a few tears on my pillow
last night too.

Blessings to you all and thank you for being a part of my special Mayberry
Family.
