We had party lines here until about 12 years ago. Party lines can mean a lot of various things. Sometimes there were only a few on each line In Mayberry's case, I believe that it was far more limited seeing that they required a switchboard operator. See what we sacrifice in the name of *progress*. No more Sarahs :( They are even trying to eliminate checkers at the Wallyworld up north of us. THAT is why I stick close to home...where they don't need any ID to write a check from me Come to think of it I didn't even have a phone then, I would hitch up the horse to the buggy and go 3 miles to the pay phone Also, there may have been a dedicated line at the sheriff's office for official calls Just thinkin...
