>>>However, as one who grew up with a party line system, I have often wondered how the people in Mayberry can answer their phones so quickly. When on a party system each home would be given a specific ring. Our ring when I was a kid was two longs and a short. So you always had to listen carefully to make sure it was ringing your home.<<<
Ken, I'm in my late forties, and when I was a kid, we still had a party line. (Being out in the country, we were probably later getting a private line than city folks.) However, I'm sure that our phone had a regular ring and that we didn't hear other people's calls. The only time we knew someone else was on the line was when we picked up the phone to make a call and heard other people talking. So I figure it was that way in Mayberry, too. My mom, however, told us that when she was young, each household on the line had a distinct ring.
