I agree that it's easy to feel sorry for poor Gomer in that scene. But I think the point of having Mr. Tucker use the car as his excuse to stay the night is that he was too proud to admit his change of heart. In other words, it revealed something about his character--he was used to being the big shot who was always right (in his own mind, anyway!) and didn't know how to be humble. Andy understood that and went along with it. I think Andy realized that if Mr. Tucker's pride were hurt, he might not stay after all. I always assumed that Andy took Gomer aside later and explained things to him.
