I was thinking about Sarah again and the Mayberry phone service. It was said that Barney has a three party line as would most of the people in Mayberry. However, as one who grew up with a party line system, I have often wondered how the people in Mayberry can answer their phones so quickly. When on a party system each home would be given a specific ring. Our ring when I was a kid was two longs and a short. So you always had to listen carefully to make sure it was ringing your home. If it rang two longs that went to our neighbors. Of course we then knew they had a phone call, which meant we could listen in. That was a favorite past time for a lot of us kids back then. If you picked up the receiver just right the people talking would not know you were listening. We picked up a lot of interesting gossip that way.
