I read with great interest the following news item from Lincoln, Nebraska
this week:
The Lincoln Police Department looks for ways to operate under a constricted
budget.
$784,755 in cuts proposed by the department could affect police services,
Police Chief Tom Casady said. We will continue to provide excellent
services, Casady said in an interview this week. Theres just going to be
fewer of those services delivered. This is not painless.
And I could not help but think of Deputy Barney Fife. Ever ahead of his
time, Deputy Fike, err, that's Fife, F-I-F-E, speaking to his superior,
Sheriff Andy Taylor, said, and I quote:
"Boy its the same the world over. Police Departments are lowest budgeted,
underdog, public servants of 'em all. But its Thank You Johnny Shafto when
the guns begin to shoot!"
Timeless. Reliable Barney Fife. His mother was the same way.
