Being a second generation Swedish American I am very familiar with the word
"skoal". When I visited relatives in Sweden we were told that whenever we
were served wine or any other such beverage the custom was to look at
everyone at the table and raise your glass to them and say skoal. Only
after each person acknowledge everyone else was it polite to take a drink.

Unfortunately my father was an alcoholic and I heard the word skoal many
times in my young days. Regrettably he only taught me only one thing in
Swedish. It was:

"Mein skoal dein skoal alla valla flicka skoal." Translated it means "I
drink you drink all the pretty girls drink." When I met my cousins in
Vinslov Sweden for the first time I said that and they burst into a hearty
Swedish laughter.

It is great to be bilingual.
