Hello Folks!!
??? My husband and I spent a weekend in Mount Airy two weeks ago and, even
though we'd been there before, we had a most extraordinary experience.? You may
remember me as the DJ who hosts the Red Rooster Party on WHUS.org where we
always have a Mayberry Corner segment.? Anyway, my husband is a bluegrass banjo
player and carried along his banjo in order to play at the Saturday morning jam
session at the Downtown Cinema from 9am-11:30am (after eating breakfast at the
Snappy Lunch).? He had a blast as everyone was inviting and made him feel at
home, brought him right up on stage.? He didn't want to "be an interloper" so
he hung back and let the others lead off.? He finally did step up and lead off
a few tunes.?
??? After the jam session, "The Merry-Go-Round" (3rd longest running radio show
in the country), live from Mount Airy began.? The first hour is a gospel group
and they were good, real good.? Unfortunately, the main group didn't appear so
some of the locals were asked to fill in AND they asked Jim to come up with
them.? I tell you what, if a possum can grin, Jim was grinning bigger than any
possum I've ever seen.....here we are, 2 weeks later and he's still walking on
air and talking about it.
Since then, he's emcee'd a concert with Ralph Stanley, but, what he talks about
is his day in Mount Airy.
??? Our time there was limited, my Mom in Kannapolis NC was having severe
health problems so we didn't spend as much time there as we'd have liked, but
the small amount of time was priceless.

Also, we went to the Downtown Cinema for the viewing of "The Waitress" with A.
Griffith....it was like going to a hometown theater, we were late, it was FULL,
we had to squeeze in and munch our popcorn quietly....slurp....? Much love to
all of you, Marti
