Welcome all newcomers. Don't be a lurker....."jump right in and hang on!" I want to say how much I look forward to reading the "Digest" and now whenever I see the episiode where Barney comes in and says the line...."Hey, who's been messin' up the bulletin board?" I have a big laugh.

Well Father's Day has come and gone, but not without provoking some thoughts I wanted to share. My own two children are now in college, and I raised them mostly by myself from grade school on. More than once I relied on the sage advice and ways of Andy Taylor as a model for parenting. The most important being the line to Opie when he was running away to join the Navy because he didn't think his Paw could be proud of him. Andy said something along the lines of just "do your best and that's good enough for me". "You're my son and I'm proud of you no matter what". (Not so different than when I watched Mr. Roger's Neighborhood!) Similar advice about "just your being you." He could be firm, but I believe Opie knew his Paw loved him no matter what. There is a tremendous scene where Opie comes into the Sheriff's Office and says to Andy something about not wanting his Paw to be disappointed in him....and Andy lifts him up and gives him the biggest hug ever. I tear up everytime I see it.....I am right now to be honest. Of course Opie had to have a well formed conscience to respond the way he did. Evidence of fine parenting I would say.

I'm sorry I'm not more specific on episodes that these are in but if you're familiar with the show (you wouldn't be reading this if you weren't) you'll know what I mean. Of course the "Opie The Birdman" episode is rich with sage parenting, so is the Mr. McBeeve episode...."I believe in Opie" is a thunderous line. There are so many more. The best TV father ever? Andy has my vote!

One more thing along these lines, I caught the tail end of the movie The Courtship of Eddie's Father on TCM Sunday. Starring Glen Ford as the father, Ron Howard as Eddie, and also noted Ron's real life dad, Rance Howard in the movie too. Filmed in 1963, I had not realized Ron was doing movies at the same time as the TAGS series. I wonder if the story line gave rise to the episode Opie's Rival where Opie works to undermine the relationship between Andy and Peggy McMillan? (Gee she was a beautiful lady!) Anyway...enough ramblings for now. Say hey to the family.
