The late Bob Hope was one such man and I did get his autograph. He loved it and felt honored when a fan approached him. I'm sure there are plenty of celebrities who are like that but not all of them are. Perhaps there have been times where they got asked (even politely) so many times it disrupted or prevented what they were trying to do, so they just try to avoid it. (Sort of like my putting up my "away" message on my IM, because I get messaged so much if I don't.) Best thing to do: if you're going to ask a celebrity for his/her autograph, be as polite and as non-invasive as possible. Thank him/her very much, maybe a line about some work of theirs you like, then say "bye" and leave them to what they were doing.
