Although there are many episodes that are my favorites, whenever I introduce
a new group of Mayberry Bible Study people or my Mayberry Fun Hour, I always
introduce the people with the very first episode, The New Housekeeper. I
believe it exemplifies the whole concept of people being needed and how
changes in one's life are never easy. In this first episode we see the
unselfish love that Aunt Bee has, where she was willing to forgo her own
needs when she decides to leave thinking Opie does not want her. We see a
little boy trying to adjust to losing another loved one in his life and
having to face the fears and uncertainty that change always brings to young
children. Opie not only lost his mother, but now he is losing Rose, and we
see so beautifully how important love and security is to children. We are
introduced to a single father trying so hard to raise his son without a
mother and of course me meet Barney Fife for the first time and we come to
understand what would ever make Andy choose him as a deputy - loyalty to his
cousin and best friend. This very first episode is only the beginning of
eight wonderful years of watching this love grow and spread out to all the
other delightful people of Mayberry.
