Now, what strikes me as really strange is this: During the first few years of the show, Andy was a smoker and occasionally lit up on screen. But it wasn't evident by his pockets. We never see that tell-tale bulge in his shirt pocket (except on the rare occasion when he actually pulls out a cigarette, as Dave noted). However, Barney is portrayed as a non-smoker. The few times he attempts to smoke (for effect), he winds up choking himself. But in the vast majority of his appearances over the five years he was on the show, Barney has a bulge in his left shirt pocket that is the shape and size of a pack of cigarettes. I'm assuming that Don Knotts must have been a smoker in real life, though I don't think I've ever seen a picture of him with a cigarette. Otherwise, what was he always carrying in his pocket? What puzzles me is that he was allowed to carry a pack around all the time while he was portraying a character that didn't smoke. Doesn't that seem odd to anyone else? Can any of our resident experts shed any light on this conundrum? I don't think I've ever seen it addressed.
