Price of gas is now $3.29 a gallon in Eau Claire. Boy do I ever miss the
sound of that ding on the old pumps. I miss the man in the dirty shirt
coming out to wash my windshield and check the oil and tires. I miss
chatting with him as he asks me how my day is going. I miss the glass dish
I always got at Christmas and the stamps that I could redeem for some really
cool gifts. I miss the smell of grease and oil that met me at the door when
I went in to give my money to a real live person. I miss being able to drop
off my car for servicing and then being able to walk home because the
service station was right in my neighborhood. I miss the sound of the glass
pop bottle coming down the shoot after I put my dime in the machine. But
most of all I miss the sound of hearing my name because the owner of the
station knew every customer by name.
Those days are gone for good, but thanks to TAGS, I can relive those
wonderful times at the local filling station as often as I want, and you
know, the older I get the more often I relive them. By the way, my father
was a mechanic all his life and I also miss stopping at the garage on my way
for school to get a nickel from him so I could buy a coke at the drug store.
