Its been theorized here in the many pearls of wisdom from trained
noticers, avaricious readers, and history "that's my subject"
specialists that the seat scooting phenomena was due to the One-Camera
production method.   The theory goes that they could shoot a one-angle
shot of someone getting into a car, but if they had to go around to the
driver's side (or vice versa) to get in, there would have to be multiple
cameras angle shot...for the simple act of getting in the car.

Now put that in your bucket and thank about the times you have seen it,
and see if this explanation might make sense.
