I have always considered the episode with Gomer and Mary Grace one of my all time favorites. How touching when Gomer returns to Thelma Lou's house to give Mary Grace her corsage. I imagine this might just be the very first corsage she was ever given. Dances are a wonderful thing for the popular and good looking people who have no trouble getting dates. But to many others it remains just a dream. I have always felt that every girl should enjoy the thrill of going to a dance all dressed up and adorned with a corsage. It would create memories for a lifetime. I know my wife's first dance was not until I met her in college. Having been raised in a church where dancing was not allowed, she was so excited to be able to get dressed up, wear flowers, go to a nice dance, and then dinner at a nice restaurant afterwards. She still has the pictures of that special night. We sometimes forget that all people no matter what their level of intelligence or beauty still all want the same thing. They want to find someone who will care about them. While Barney may have considered Mary Grace a "dog", Gomer was able to look beyond Mary Grace's outer self and find the truly "nice" person that she really was. And Mary Grace was able to get beyond all that gas and oil smell and discover the warm, kind, and innocent qualities of Gomer Pyle.
