We're never told what Thelma Lou's occupation is; we don't even know for sure that she HAS a job at all (maybe she has a rich daddy?). The only clue is in "Man in the Middle." Barney is trying to get Thelma Lou and Helen to both come to the courthouse at the same time so they can talk things out, and during this scene we hear the following dialoge: Barney: Want some coffee? How's everything at the office? Thelma Lou: I just dropped everything at the office to come over and find out ... (at this point she is interrupted by Helen's entrance). Later in the same scene, Thelma Lou twice says, "I have to get back to the office." So she is probably a secretary, receptionist, file clerk, something like that.
