Hello fellow citizens of our beloved Mayberry,
I've been itching to write as its just past the one year anniversary
of my moving to this new community....the Digest....My Hometown.
I joined soon after Don Knott's death. Its been a fun experience.
I'd like to share a thought or two on a recent related experience.
I've been a lifelong fan, but in the last year, I've really jumped in
researching
TAGS and related information, largely via the internet....when it occurred to
me to use the incredible feature
Google Earth. Using it, I located the Franklin Canyon Lake, (Meyers Lake) the
Cahuenga Studios (where the interior shots were done) and the 40 Acres Backlot
property...home of Mayberry. No, she's long gone, but the triangular piece of
property is still there,
bound by Higuera Avenue and West Jefferson Blvd. It's now clearly an industrial
park as
described elsewhere......no longer resembling our little burg.
I know this will sound daffy to some, but probably not (I hope) to most of you,
but I got a little emotional when I located the present day Backlot via Google
Earth.
I thought my goodness, there she is. That's where our little town
stood.....full of our fondest memories.
I was over taken by sadness for a moment or two (even though I already knew she
was gone).
As you may know, you can use Google Earth as if you're flying above in a
helicopter or something
and survey the area. It was as if I had found a sacred space. Indeed I had.
Oh, were it so to stroll downtown past the Courthouse, Floyds, Crowley's
Market. Maybe over
to Thelma Lou's tonight for TV and a pan of cashew fudge. God Love You
Mayberry!
PS: I know its a compellsion....but I bought some Jell-O Brand Butterscotch
Instant Pudding
the other day.......mmmmmmmmmmmmm.....outstandingly good!
