>>>Has anyone noticed just when Andy lost his southern accent? It seems
to me that when it left, so did the soft spoken, gentle sheriff.
Andy, in the early black and whites, used to find ways to build Barney
up, especially when he had messed things up. When the accent left the
show, so did compassion and patience - even Barney's began to change. At
the end of Barney's presence on the show, Andg and Barn argued often.
Do you think that the writers for the show thought that this change was
more desirable to the viewing audience? I believe that the writers for
the first shows were not the same ones that wrote for the later ones.
Too bad.
I wonder if this had anything to do with Don Knotts leaving the show.

Its always nice to get a new person in the neighborhood that we can
educate/discuss some of the basics that over the years I think we've
come to consensus on. Here we go.

1) Andy lost his southern accent after season 1, a deliberate change by
the producers since it was evident that he could play the straight role
with the comedic genius of Don Knotts, Howard McNear (Floyd) and others
to play off of.

2) If you think compassion and patience left...well, that's just like
your vote, its your business, but I'm voting 'that is not accurate'
Mayberry stayed a compassionate place, and if Andy lost his patience
occasionally, that was just part of the script for that particular
episode--the actor in the man.

3) There was no writer decision to make Andy and Barney argue more.
That is a generalization that some perhaps perceive, buts its how
inaccurate rumors get started here in Mayberry. (Did you hear that
Barney Fife Shot himself??)

4) Don Knotts left after 5 season because Andy planned on ending the
show. Don signed a multiple-movie deal, and then the Network convinced
Andy to come back for another season (tuned out to be 3). No hard
feelings, no shift in stories, just business.

5) There were 30 some different writers, and yes the last seasons were
not as memorable as the early years but, in my opinion, it had nothing
to do with arguing, or patience or losing accents.

This website will give you an idea of all the different writers
