"Weenie Man" was asking why Andy and Barn never wore short sleeve uniform
shirts no matter how hot it got. Even when it was 92, they still wore long
sleeves. I can't recall any episode where a uniformed police officer had
short sleeves on. Since "Mayberry" was in the State of North Carolina, I
happen to know the North Carolina Highway Patrol wear long sleeve shirts and
neck ties year 'round. At least they used to. Perhaps this is some old
custom steeped in the long history and tradition of the N.C.H.P., I don't
know for sure. Since I am a state trooper (in Indiana, not North Carolina),
I do know that many local agencies in the past often took their leads (and
to some extent, many still do) from the state police or highway patrols from
their respective states on many different issues such as uniform styles,
vehicle markings, etc. Perhaps that might explain why the Mayberry
Sheriff's Department never wore short sleeve uniform shirts. Since I can't
say for sure, we couldn't classify this as one of those "odd facts known by
few" but it's just my thoughts on the subject.
