Our friends in Mayberry certainly have a lot to be thankful for this Thanksgiving. They can be thankful that they live in such a wonderful close knit community where everyone cares about one another. They can be thankful that they are able to have a sheriff who does not feel a need to wear a gun because the people who live there are honest and law-abiding citizens. They can be thankful that their children are safe and secure as they walk to and from school or as they play together outside after dark. The children can be thankful that they are living in loving homes that are not exposed to graphic television programming and internet pornography or child predators. Everyone in Mayberry can be thankful that they live in a community where Sundays are still sacred and the shopkeepers don't feel compelled to stay open in order to make a few extra dollars. Parents in Mayberry can be thankful that their children go to a school where good manners are expected and the Pledge of Allegiance with the words "under God" is said every morning.
Very few people in Mayberry can be classified as being wealthy as far as their materialistic possessions are concerned. But when one considers where they live and who their friends and neighbors are, I think we would all agree that the people of Mayberry are among the richest people in the world. I know on this Thanksgiving Day when I say my prayers of thanks, you can be sure I will say, "Thank you God for Mayberry. Thank you for a place that brings me so much happiness and joy.Thanks you for a place like the Digest where I have come to know so many wonderful people." To all of you, my Mayberry friends, I wish a very Happy Thanksgiving. May each of you in your own way give thanks to all the blessings that you have. Kenneth G.
