Hey, saw your message.  I have pondered over this a
lot too!  It is one of the interesting aspects of the
set design.  

Just a guess, but I think the boxes were added to just
dress up the set and keep the windows from being so
noticeable.  They sure do a mighty good job of
simulating sunlight outsite of those windows don't
they.  You know, the interior sets were on a
soundstage.  All lighting is artificial.

I think another reason may be to provide a more solid
background for the actors that would not be too
distracting.

I am always interested in the arctecture of the sets. 
Another thing to notice is that in the houses, all of
the doors and windows have sheers, to diffuse the
backdrops outside of the windows to keep them from
looking so fake.
