I would like to share several recent experiences I have had when I was able to be a true "Ambassador to Mayberry". Our city newspaper recently sent a reporter and photographer to one of my Back to Mayberry Bible classes, and it resulted in a wonderful Sunday edition feature story with a large color picture of yours truly leading the class. Since that story appeared I have had numerous people stop me and ask about the class and how I got interested in Mayberry. It is so wonderful to see how animated the people get when they tell their stories about growing up watching The Andy Griffith Show. They always end up asking me how I keep up on so many details about the show, and that gives me the opportunity to tell them about our wonderful family here at the digest.
Last week I spoke at our Lions Club Noon Luncheon. Because of the article in the paper they wanted to hear more about my interest in Mayberry and the bible study. I used as my theme the fact that Mayberry does not have a Lions Club, but that they do have a Regal Order of the Golden Door of Good Fellowship Lodge. It worked out perfectly, and they especially enjoyed it when I read old Jud's minutes: "The last meeting was called to order at 7:30 p.m. with 27 members present. Since there was no business to be conducted, some of the fellows went home and other ones just hung around. After a while the meeting was adjourned." Once again I was able to share my love of Mayberry and also the existence of the digest. I volunteer one day a week at our local Regional Cancer Center and what better place to talk about Mayberry than a place where so many people are experiencing pain and illness in their lives. I try to wear my Barney Fife watch when I work there, as it is a perfect way to get on the topic of Mayberry. For a few minutes once a week, in a small way, Mayberry can help some very sick people forget about their pain and illness for a short time and exchange it for some laughter and smiles. Lastly, I have been involved in getting one of our state legislatures to come to the hospital where I volunteer and speak on health care issues. When his secretary called me from the state capital to confirm the time, he asked me about my Mayberry related website. So we ended up laughing and talking about Mayberry and the digest for almost a half hour. The whole point of this rather lengthy posting is to remind you that we never know when we will be called upon to share our passion for Mayberry. There are so many people out there, both young and old, who love Mayberry and its wonderful people. So keep talking about Mayberry. In this day and age people really do enjoy hearing about those simpler days that so many of us truly long for once again. Kenneth G.
