Re: The Family Table

Oh, how true the comments from Ken Anderson on "The Family Table." I
certainly agree - growing up in Mount Airy, NC in the 30's and 40's
virtually all our meals were around that wonderful table. I believe
any of today's families that don't have that experience are being
cheated of an important experience in life. My grandparents used the
time to impart words of wisdom for my young ears - my mother used
the time to remind me of my manners, and I always had a chance to
talk about what had happened at Rockford Grammar School during the day.

We might go to the Snappy Lunch for a hot dog in the middle of the
day, but "supper time" saw all of the family members together. And I
always had a chore or two to help with the evening meal, so I felt a
part of the process.

It was those memories that sent me looking for those that still
value "home cooking" and down-home hearty food the beginning of this
year, leading to a national recipe contest and a new book, "Mayberry
Momma's Food for the Soul and Body," (Just coming off the press and
soon to be available from Weavers, I'm sure.)

In addition to the contest winners, the book includes some special
recipes, including "Aunt Bee's Chicken & Rice" casserole from our own
Janine Johnson (Aunt Bee of Orlando to us WBMUTBB folks.)

I'll be on the Mayberry Cruise with Alan and the rest (including
Janine) next week. At last count, we had 150 TAGS fans aboard.

Do what you can to revive the Family Table. I'm convinced that
children that grow up with that experience are blessed!
