I caught another geographical issue recently that I had never noticed
before. This is in the episode where Congressman John Canfield came to
Mayberry.
Andy is remarking how Aunt Bee got in very late the night before. Aunt Bee
says
"He took me to The Reef at Nags Head" and describes a seafood dinner they
ate.

Wow! No wonder Aunt Bee was in late. Anyone from NC and anyone who has ever
traveled to the Outer Banks can attest to the fact that there is no quick way
to get to Nags Head (not by car anyway). There is no Interstate anywhere near
Nags Head and you have to travel U.S Highways and potentially smaller roads
to get there depending on which route you take.

Based upon the roads at the time, and the somewhat "floating" location of
Mayberry, the trip could have taken as much as 3 to 4 hours one way to get
from Mayberry to Nags Head, or more than six hours round trip. Hope the dinner
was good! No wonder she got in late!!!

(Perhaps this is just one of Andy's subtle ways of recognizing the folks
back home. Of course, from Manteo Nags Head would be a much shorter trip....)
