Hacker role is his most famous My experience is that most people outside the TAGS community actually seem to know Allan Melvin best as Sam the Butcher. He's also well known as Sgt. Hacker and as the voice of Magilla Gorilla, and during the 1950s he played one of Sgt. Bilko's corporals on "The Phil Silvers Show" (and does some of the intros on the Silvers DVDS that came out recently). And don't forget he was Archie Bunker's friend and neighbor on "All in the Family," and in one episode Archie accidentally ran over his dog.
