This started out as a bit that Andy and Don used to do at parties to entertain their friends, then they decided to work it into The Show. Many fans may not realize that quite a lot of the scenes that featured the two lawmen with no other characters present were actually written by Andy and Don themselves. These scenes often took place on Andy's front porch or in the courthouse. Anyway, there are two episodes in which variations of the "memory" routine were used: "Ellie Comes to Town," in which Barney attempts to memorize the rule "an officer of the law shall enforce the law without regard to personal welfare and safety," and "Opie's Ill-Gotten Gain" in which attempts to recite the Preamble of the U. S. Constitution, which he claims to have learned in the eighth grade. In both cases, Barney could not recall even one single word! --Paul P.S.
