**it should be no surprise that Warren's character
wasn't received well. Besides the inevitable
comparisons to Barney, in his first episode ("The
Bazaar") it's made very clear that no one in
town--except maybe Andy--likes Warren. So, in asking
us to like him, they were asking us to go against the
very chacracters we loved. Of course, those
characters came to like Warren, but they're a lot more
forgiving than us real people. Again, makes you
thank!**
I've said before and continue to believe, if they'd left Warren in maybe two or
three more episodes after "The Legend of Barney Fife," he would've grown on
more people. That's the one where we see him hero-worshipping Barney and
treating him like a mentor, and it ends with Barney kind of passing the torch
to him. I think that episode would've been a turning point for Warren. If you
remember on "Cheers," Frasier Crane was very unlikeable at first and I doubt he
would've lasted, except for that classic episode about the "snipe hunt." That
was a turning point for him in the same fashion and look how durable he turned
out to be.
