The producers wisely chose not to name a specific denomination, as it's an issue about which some folks are sensitive. If they had said it was "Church A" then it's possible that members of "Church B" would have refused to watch the show. We can easily narrow it down a bit, though. They're obviously Christian, since they sing Christian hymns and their members celebrate Christmas. They're obviously Protestant, because the pastor does not wear robes and no one ever addresses him as "father." They're not Seventh Day Adventists, because they worship on Sunday. They're not Church of Christ, because they use an organ. They're not Moravian, because according to Andy Griffith, every Moravian Church has a band (this is what attracted him to that denomination as a boy, in real life). And they're not Southern Baptist, because A: on Mayberry RFD, Andy Taylor Jr. was christened in the church, and 2: in "Irresistible Andy" the church held a dance.
