I, too, never heard of "sweet tea" when I was growing up. It was always "ice tea." There was no reason to define "sweet tea" since there was no such thing as "unsweet tea." Tea was always sweet. It wasn't until I got grown and traveled to the lands of the northern persuasion that I first encountered tea that wasn't sweet.
