Finding the pop vs. soda vs. tea discussion amusing and interesting. I grew up in the 60s in Western Nebraska. Although we didn't have it that often on the farm....it was pop. "I'll have a bottle of pop" And it was kind of a big deal to have it.....especially if you got into town and could get one straight from one of those machines! Colder than we had it at home!
Very much relate to going to the gas station....like Wally's to get a bottle...... and what a selection! 8 maybe 10 ounces at most. Now 16 ounce is standard and 20 or more is common! Talk about selling product!....but I digress. When my cousins would come from Missouri, or Texas they would bring, drink, and reference....soda......"Y'all want a soda?" I have always understood it to be more of a regional thing--south and east called it soda or soda pop. Further west and northwest called it pop. We did have lots of tea at home.....always called it "iced tea". Lots of people sweetened it, some didn't--including me--but I never heard it called sweet tea. .....just simply "iced or ice tea" Made lots sun-tea......setting out big jars of water with tea bags in the sun and letting it "brew" during the day. "yep...think I'll go downtown get me a bottle of pop......"
