I just had the most amazing Mayberry weekend. My good friend Gary Wedemeyer
and I met up in Mayberry to do some looking around and some business with
another Mayberrian. It was great walking around and seeing all of the sights
in town. We also ran into Emmett Forrest and chatted with him for a bit, he
is so wonderful to talk to and the epitome of what a person from Mayberry is
all about.
While walking around we ran into a couple from Indiana who decided to sell
everything they owned to move to Mt. Airy. They are opening up a shop right
across the street from the Snappy Lunch. They also bought a home just down
the street. I came home and told me wife about that and she said, "What are
they, a bunch of NUTTS?" She has always thought I was a nutt with all of my
collecting and all. My entire 1200 square foot basement and huge pole barn
out back is filled with Mayberry collectibles and autographs.
But the real fun started when I got back home to Ohio from Mt. Airy. My
wife and I own a
1961 Mayberry Patrol car. We have spent the last four years restoring it to
show condition. With that said, a family friend of ours called me
yesterday. He is the real life Otis Campbell. He is 61 years old and still
lives at
home with his father. Occasionally he likes to get a snoot fill! Well
yesterday he called me from a bar and wanted me to come and get him and give
him
a ride home, he was drunker than a skunk!!!!! Boy oh Boy, I was so excited to
go and pick him up in my patrol car.
When my wife and I got to the bar I had no idea what my wife was going to do
next. She grabbed my Barney Fife hat out of the back and took the handcuffs
I had and went into the bar armed just like ole Barney Fife himself. She
said,"Come on Otis lets go to the lock up!" I just about crapped myself and
so
did all of the people in the bar! Everyone was going nutts!!!! My wife
Marsha escorted him out of the bar in handcuffs. Everyone followed us out to
the squad car with the lights and sirens blaring!
The look on everyone's faces was priceless. We put him in the back seat and
off we went back to his own little lockup at his dad's house.
Living in my own little Mayberry World doesn’t get any better than this past
 weekend!
Gomer says hey! Lots of luck to you and yers!
