I believe the reason they had Don talking with his mouth full was to show that he was totally "at home" in Peggy's house, and having a "good ol' time" with her. It made his degree of familiarity with her climb way up the scale, which would further intimidate Andy. If Don had been sitting on the couch in a three-piece suit balancing a cup of tea on his knee, inquiring about the health of Peggy's dear mother, Andy's reaction to him would have been totally different.
