After Howard and Millie Swanson decided not to get married in an episode of Mayberry RFD Goober decided to ask her to the Harvest Ball. So he had Sam write a letter to Millie asking on his behalf. Millie found the letter in Sam's typewriter and assumed he was going to ask her to the dance. However when she received the letter signed by Goober she accepted Goober's invitation. But when Goober saw Millie and Sam dancing together he realized she wanted to be with Sam, so Goober left the dance but ended up walking the girl home who was selling tickets. Later on in an episode there was a reference to Howard having gone with Millie and Howard says that it just did not work out with them and they were good friends. Or at least something to that effect.
