Hey folks, I have been asked to officially break the news of a neat new Mayberry related project. This is BIG!! When Don Knotts passed away we were somewhat saddened by the lack of coverage in the news. He made such an impact on the entertainment industry that we felt like something more needed to be done. After much debate we decided on trying to erect a statue of Don Knotts in Andy Griffith’s home town of Mt. Airy, NC. TV Land had this to say: “Don Knotts was such an unbelievable talent and we all miss him dearly. We have great respect for the work he has done. We think a statue of Don is a loving tribute and it’s great of the people of Mt Airy to step up and do this.” Here is another note: Dear Hellenbrand Family,
I wish you all the best in your endeavor to procure funds for a statue of my father. I think it's a swell idea. I don't know if any of us will be available to appear at the unveiling, but I do wish you well. It is very heartwarming to witness the incredible outpouring of love for my father and his work all over the world. All the best, Karen Knotts We also have 100% approval and backing from Paramount/CBS on this project. The statue will be donated to the city if Mount Airy. They will decide where the statue will be placed. We hope to have the unveiling at this year’s Mayberry Days. WE NEED YOUR HELP!! This is a not-for-profit venture. These statues do not come cheap. We want it to be for the fans from the fans. We have created a web site: www.donknottsstatue.com Here you can read all about the project. We will be auctioning off a mint replica 1963 Mayberry Squad Car and matching golf cart and trailer. We will be having auctions on eBay. We will be taking donations, both money and items to be placed on eBay. Any money raised beyond the cost of the statue will be donated to Mr. Knotts' favorite charity as designated by his wife Francey. So, with the help of fans like you, we hope to make this project come to life! This statue will be a reminder for those who come after us of what a brilliant and talented performer Mr. Knotts was and how he brought a sleepy little town full of love to life for so many people. This project is spear-headed by Thomas Hellebrand and Neil Shelton of Mount Airy. Please stop by the web site and read all about this worthwhile project and see how you can help. There are email addresses on the site so you can ask any questions or send your comments. We look forward to hearing from you all.
