Since we're telling Betty Lynn stories, I have a wonderful memory from Mayberry
Days 2004. It was later in the day on Friday after Andy had dedicated the
TVLand statue that morning. I was waiting with a friend in one of the stores
there on Main Street (can't remember which one) where Betty was signing
autographs. (I had met Betty Lynn and gotten her autograph several years
earlier, but I wanted my friend to meet her). My friend was the last one in
line, so as they were wrapping things up, I was in the "right place at the
right time," and had the privilege of escorting her out of the store (along
with the store owner) to her car, which Jim Clark had brought around. The store
had an ice cream counter and she stopped and got an ice cream cone (on the
house, of course!). She had worked through lunch and was famished, I'm sure,
but she was so patient, kind and gracious to everyone who had waited in line to
meet her. I treasure the memory of being able to walk her out -- I just hope it
didn't make Barn jealous!
