Boy is this BIG!!! Aw, big ain’t the word for it!!!
I just returned from a trip to our nations capital city, and I stopped by
Mayberry (Mt. Airy) on the way back!!! We ate an early lunch at the Snappy
Lunch where I (of course) ordered the Pork Chop Sandwich. Good to see old
Charles Dowell still working there!!! After Snappy, I got a Russell Hiatt
haircut
at Floyd’s, and we got our picture on the wall of fame. Russell gave my
daughter a T-shirt from Floyd’s Barbershop….(What a nice man!!!!)
Now you old-timers may already know this, so this is for the new arrivals:
We visited Opie’s Candy Shop, the Playhouse, the Mayberry Five and Dime and
Andy’s Homeplace. But one place (actually two) I had not been before was Wally’
s Service Station on South Main. It was a blast. I ate a moon pie and drank
a bottle of pop while rocking on the front porch. There are a lot of
interesting Mayberry and non-Mayberry items inside Wally’s…..…..Right next to
Wally’
s the owners of a tour service will take you on rides through Town in squad
car replicas. I got in the ’63 Ford Galaxie and loved it. The tour guides
have a replica of the courthouse and jail that is wonderful. I got my picture
on
the phone calling Sarah from Sheriff Taylor’s desk. Then I sat at Barney’s
desk and in Otis’ cell. We all got our picture taken being “arrested” and
put in the back of the squad car. The whole thing was a blast!!!
As is my usual custom, I jaywalked on Main Street and strolled over to take
a look at the movie house to see what was showing. Also, on the subject of
Mayberry, I saw the original Constitution of the United States while in
Washington. You could not use a flash, but I took a close up picture of the
words “
We the People” and thought of old Barn trying to recite the preamble. My
daughter said it wasn’t fair that all the documents were in cursive because
she
could not read cursive yet…. (we also saw the Bill of Rights, Declaration of
Independence, Magna Carta and Susan B. Anthony’s arrest warrant) I told her I
have been reading cursive for many years and I still couldn’t read it!!!
(Although as a crackerjack attorney I, of course, have the Constitution
memorized!!!!!)
Anyway, for the new arrivals, I highly recommend a visit to Mt. Airy, and
to the old-timers I remind you that Mayberry never gets old and we need to
take a trip up there every now and then when we are able. It was a refreshing
day for me….I keep threatening to move there…..Also, while there, I recruited
a couple of new members for WBMUTBB....
