I'll throw in my 2 cents regarding Warren. I don't want to break a number
rule, but my opinion is that we could enjoy Andy and Barney's interaction over
Barney's mistakes because of the obvious friendship the two men and two
characters had. Andy and Warren didn't seem to have that kind of chemistry,
and it made Warren seem sort of annoying instead of well intentioned bungling.
I think Warren's character would have been better if he'd just come across as a
very straight arrow, intellectual kind of guy (such as Howard Sprague). Even
in this enlightened century I can still see the difference when a Northerner is
transplanted here in TX. The cultural differences between proper Bostonian
Warren and down home Mayberrians could have been funny. I think it was that
everyone loved Barney so much that the writers wanted to recreat him in Warren,
but theren's only one Barn.

The new deputy would need to be someone of a different type as Barney, but
who would have made a good counter to Andy. Perhaps Malcolm Merriweather or
one of his Englishter cousins. He could be so heavily accented that no one
would know what he was talking about.
