Replacing Barney was a tall order anyway, but I think it would have worked with someone who had name recognition. I saw "Banjo Playing Deputy" the other night and that left me thinking Jerry Van Dyke would've done a halfway decent job. Other names I have mentioned in the past: Tim Conway, who at the time was about to film the last season of "McHale's Navy," and Don Knotts' fellow Steve Allen alumnus, Tom Poston. I never thought Warren was all that bad myself (definitely no Don Knotts--who else could have been?), and the episode "The Legend of Barney Fife" left me thinking had Warren stayed around a few more episodes he would've grown on everyone, like Kirstie Alley on "Cheers" when she replaced Shelley Long. But hindsight is 20/20, especially when we've now had 41 years to think about it.
