At the risk of oversimplifying (or getting obtuse) the reason Goober didn't have a regular girl is because that is the way the character was written! If he had a regular girl, we might not have had the episode Goober and the Art of Love, the Computer dating episode, or the episode where Goober and Gomer take over for Andy and Barney at the dance to entertain the fungirls.... It seems his lack of having a girl was a big part of the show. In addition to the above, he was often used as the "back up" to go to the movies when Ange or Barn couldn't go with their girls etc... Several times you can remember him walking along the street late at night, popping into the courthouse wondering if anyone was there or if anybody wanted to do something....... Seems he wouldn't be the same......
