That's really a good point, Lydia. Having Barney drop all communication with
Thelma Lou after he left town was not consistent with his character nor with
their relationship throughout the show's previous years. Barney was apparently
a conscientious letter writer, since he used to write letters to Andy even
while he was only on a week's vacation at Raleigh. Also, Barney and Thelma Lou
had several standing dates per week, every week, for a few years. It doesn't
make sense that he would move away and then just casually put off communicating
with her. The only logical reason was if they had a huge fall-out which
prompted Barney's departure from Mayberry. But that is never mentioned or even
hinted at, is it?

I, too, feel that the writers dropped the ball on this one. Even those who
only saw each episode one time during the original run must have scratched
their heads at Barney's comment. When I looked at the Episode Guide on
www.Mayberry.com<http://www.mayberry.com/>, I saw that the show was penned by
good writers (Bill Idelson and Sam Bobrick, I think). I wish we could find out
just what they were thinking when they wrote this episode!
