I think part of Barney's persona was that he wanted to be perceived as a 
"ladies man" I believe that Andy recognized Barney's bravado as being the 
result of an inferiority complex, & always went out of his way to build up 
Barney & help him feel good about himself.  There were times when Andy made 
sure that Barney received the credit for capturing someone.   In the case of 
cave rescue both he & Helen knew that Barney would look & feel foolish in the 
eyes of the town, if it were known that they got out on their own. 
Barney so often was his own worst enemy, but was well meaning in everything he 
did. There was such a sweet relationship between Andy & Barney, & the writers 
captured the bond that existed between the two of them in real life.
