I agree with Dixon and Paul (though I also think Jerry's character may have had
more success than the Warren character). Jerry's ineptness seemed a tad over
the top, and it wasn't balanced out by things that he could do well (his banjo
skill wasn't really displayed in his lone appearance). His speech pattern
(hesitancy, loss for words) was overdone, too, more so than the similar Stacy
character he played on "The Dick Van Dyke Show."

The thing that surprised me in that episode was Andy's mild reaction when he
discovered Jerry dressed as a deputy -- badge and all -- and attempting to make
an arrest. Isn't impersonating an officer a pretty serious offense?? I know
Jerry's intentions weren't bad, but here's a guy that Andy barely knows
(despite Aunt Bee's long-ago connection to his parents), he's generally inept,
he has no law enforcement training, and Andy has already refused to consider
him as deputy material. So he steals a uniform, puts his safety in danger
attempting an arrest of two guys in a fight, and doesn't even get a slap on the
wrist by Andy! In fact, Andy allows Jerry to continue working for him, albeit
without the badge. That just didn't seem too plausible to me.

But maybe I'm just being hard to please. The producers could have chosen to
end Don's final season on a high note with a good Barney episode, and they
didn't. I guess that just sticks in my craw!

My two cents,
Thelma Lou
