In my last post, I mentioned that Thelma Lou graciously overlooked most of Barney's flaws. In fact, she often seemed affectionately amused by them. That's one of the things I really like about Thelma Lou's character. She was aware of her man's flaws, but she didn't ridicule or criticize them. Instead, she found them rather endearing.
One of my favorite such moments is in the "Cave Rescue" episode when Thelma Lou convinces Barney to explore the old mining cave, which Andy and Helen have already entered. Barney walks in reluctantly, pressing his hat down over his head for fear of bats which, he insists, will lay their eggs in your hair and make you go crazy. When Thelma Lou tells him that he's seen nothing but a moth, Barney says that moths can do the same thing! I love to watch Betty Lynn's face during this scene. Though she chides him a bit for his unwarranted fears, she is clearly getting a real kick out of Barney's silliness. You can almost here her thinking to herself, "Isn't he a hoot? I sure do love him!" Do any of you recall other moments when Thelma Lou is amused by something Barney says or does?
