Thanks for the plug on Merlefest, Jeff. I am ecstatic to be at the
same festival with folks like the Dillards. Yippee! Look forward to
seeing you there.

Don, it was a blast to be Arthur Smith's show. I guess in his day he
was the Ed Sullivan of the South. Arthur started on WBT radio (the
precursor of WBTV), around the same time as the Carter family got their
start on the station, so he's been around country music since before
there really was anything called country music. Andy Griffith applied
for a job on WBT in 1941, but was turned down (little did they know!)
Later though, Andy was a guest on Arthur's TV show. Alison Krauss and
Union Station were on the same episode I was on, and they played (IIRC)
in tshirts and shorts, while Arthur, the old professional, wore a suit
and tie. They sounded great though. The latest incarnation of
"Carolina Calling" was an attempt by UNC-TV to resurrect the show in a
modern setting, but it never gained much traction. I wish I could have
seen the show back in its heyday.

The song I sang on Arthur's show was "Carolina." You can hear (and
download) it, if you want, here:
