Mr. Vince Staten, a writer in our local paper, is a big TAGS fan. He wrote a nice column concerning Don Knotts' passing, and yesterday wrote about those residents of Mayberry who have gone on to their reward. Someone sent him a list of 184 who have gone before (he left out Mr. Schwump, which is understandable, since no one ever seemed to know who he was - or did someone find out? - and Bill Bixby, whom someone wrote in and added...) Nevertheless, it appears to be quite a complete list and makes me very sad to know that so very many are gone.
In yesterday's column Mr. Staten also wrote about our Darling person Maggie Peterson Mancuso (there are a couple of pictures on his website, one including Thelma Lou). Another local resident attended high school with Don Knotts, and his wife submitted a copy of a talent show program where "Donald Knotts" was a Ventriloquist. You can also find the article Mr. Staten wrote on "Barney" after his death. There is also at least one more TAGS articles in his archives, but I don't remember when it was/they were written. Here's the web address: http://vincestaten.blogspot.com Don Knotts came to "My Hometown" (Kingsport, Tennessee) for Mayberry at Meadowview a few years ago, and I only got to see him from a distance, when he rode into the auditorium in a Mayberry Sheriff's cruiser owned by a local policeman, and while he was on stage (I was sitting way in the back!) He was not feeling well that night and wasn't able to meet folks or sign autographs after the program, but I'll always cherish that night as one of the highlights of my life - when I saw Barney in person! I'll love him forever! Love to all my old (and new) Mayberry friends!
