- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Here is some basic information on the hometown of Malcolm Merriweather. Heckmondwike (known locally by its nickname "Hecky") is a small town located in the county of West Yorkshire, England, often overshadowed by its neighbors, Batley and Dewsbury. Heckmondwike lies 8 miles SSE of Bradford, not far from the city of Leeds. Locals usually refer to it as a "town", although it is not on the list of towns in England that have received a town charter. Like many of the towns in West Yorkshire, Heckmondwike was formerly a milling town, located in the Heavy Woollen District. Heckmondwike was the first town in England to have Christmas lights (illuminations). The town is also the birthplace of John Curwen, the developer of the Tonic Sol-fa system of musical notation. (A street in one of the housing estates is named after him.) Joseph Priestley, the clergyman and philosopher who discovered oxygen, visited often because his aunt lived there. Today, Heckmondwike is an important center of the blanket and carpet manufactures, and there are also machine works, dye works, and iron foundries. Coal is extensively wrought in the vicinity.
