If I remember correctly, Emma's back pain was all in her head so the
druggist gave her sugar pills which she thought was medicine. She told
Ellie that she never had to have a prescription before -- that Fred just
gave her the pills and she paid 10 cents.

By the way, I have spent the last two Sunday afternoons/evenings watching
the Matlock marathons on the Hallmark Channel. I have been in heaven!!

Have a great Mayberry Day.

I believe there is a line in that episode that Emma says, something like "I
don't need a doctor. I just need my pills!" I took that to mean she never
went to the doctor but she just went over to see Fred, put down her dime,
and he gave her her pills.

I absolutely love this episode. It is just hilarious. My husband and I
joke all the time about this episode. If one of us has a prescription or we
are taking cold medicine and we forget to take our pills, we say, "Oh, no, I
need my pills!!" And we love the part of the episode when she tells Ellie
that "Come Christmas time, I'll not be buying my cotton balls from YOU!" I
guess she does Christmas crafts and uses cotton balls. That probably runs
into quite a bit of money Ellie was getting ready to lose!! :)

Emma didn't need a prescription because the pills were just placebo sugar
pills. Knowing how honest and upright all the citizens of Mayberry were, I
am sure the doctor could not violate his oath and write a fake prescription
for fake pills. Besides, Emma said she didn't need a prescription so she
probably would not go to the doctor to try to even get one. Anyway, that's
my theory.

Marie, it is implied in the show that Emma is a hypochondriac who imagines all
her dreadful aches and pains. Hence, the sugar pills which "cure" Emma's pains
and allow the pharmacist to satisfy her without the need to convince her (which
he obviously couldn't) that she didn't need any medication in the first place.
You'll note in the scene in her house that her near-death experience didn't
dull her appetite, and she perked right up just knowing that she was getting
her pills!
