I think Aunt Bee may have been committment phobic. She had as many or more
suitors than anyone else on the show, but she didn't settle down with anyone.

I would like to mention, along with all the great reports of Mayberry Days,
that this year was just flat wonderful! No two ways about it....Andy's
appearance really set off the weekend with a bang! Allen Newsome and David
Browning really out did themselves. It was a disappointment that Phil Lee
(our Ernest T.) was unable to attend. Thanks, Allen and David, you done er
real good!!!!
Now, I don't want to start a moulage or anything, so don't go letting that
vein stick out in your neck. You know how you can get sooooo sensitive over
the least little bitty thing or two....but.......the chapter leaders of
Chicken Thieves and Whatnot took a drive up into the mountains in search of
and found the quaint little town of Mayberry, VA.
It was there, in the Mayberry Trading Post that I learnt from the proprieter
(and by the way, she mentioned that she could trace her ancestors back 300
years in that there valley of the Blue Ridge, and that's a heaping amount of
time) that Mayberry, Virginia, is the town where Andy Giffith's mother was
born.
Now, I got this idea, if'n that's an actual fact, that maybe, just maybe the
idea that I got was that Andy Griffith got the idea for naming Mayberry
after that town so's folks in Mount Airy wouldn't be deludged with
interlopers and gawkers. And if'n anybody went to looking for Mayberry,
they'd have a mightly hard time finding it cause we sure did. There's ain't
be less than 300 folks that make up the town and if'n you blink on the drive
up the Blue Ridge Parkway, you done missed her.
But if you go, and I know you're antsy for the drive now, be sure to stop on
a Saturday or Sunday, when you can witness first hand and smell the
intoxicating aroma of the makings of homemade pumpkin butter. The young
lady, Katherine, turns the paddle that stirs the butter in a vat 4 feet
deep. It takes 8 hours to turn pumpkin into butter or for the more
scientifically inclined - 3 pounds of sugar to the finished gallon of
butter. The honey bees swarm around and the aroma can make anyone who just
finished off a Snappy Lunch Pork Chop Sammich drool with anticipation and a
whole now found appetitie. The leaves are turning now and the air is a bit
nippy but just being in the actual town (if town is the appropriate word) of
Mayberry is the cream on your latte of Mayberry Days!!!!
Between seeing Andy for real, being at Maybery Days, enjoying the still
fresh sounds of the Dillards/Darlings, getting a hug from Charlene, the
magic of the VW Boys, the mosaic parade, Elvis, Betty Lynn/Thelma Lou's
sweet appearance, Pork Chop Sammich, a Cheerwine (or two), getting a kick
out of watching Pat win Trivia - again, touching the statue of Andy and Opie
(and seeing the original statue in Raleigh) and a drive up the Blue Ridge to
Mayberry, VA, well.....all I can say is, I'm humbled...and prourd, so
proud!!! I thank everyone invvolved for an OUTSTANDING weekend!!!!

TAGS fans,
For those of you who have never had the chance to read
my novel "Murder in Mayberry", it will be serialized
on the web site www.dailyread.com starting October 21!
It's a good, fun story involving our favorite sheriff
and his loyal deputy, who have discovered what appears
to be a murder scene at a cabin by Tucker's Lake. It
also gives an answer to why Barney would have left
Mayberry in the summer of '65. (Most of us have heard
or read about why Don Knotts left, this story is an
explanation for why Barney would leave, and how he
could get the good job he went to.)
If you want to read a preview of the story, go to my
web site (listed below my signature), click on the
button marked "library", then scroll towards the
bottom of that page and click on the "Murder in
Mayberry" link.
Best of Luck to You and Yours,
Sam

Below is a link to a couple good opportunities for members of WBMUTBB to take
an affordable vacation in the coming months and support the Surry Arts
Council's efforts to host Mayberry Days each year.
A SAC supporter in Mount Airy donated the use of two luxury time share units -
one in Myrtle Beach, SC and one in Orlando, FL - to the Silent Auction, but we
did not get any bids on them that Saturday. They are still available and SAC
would like to extend the bidding through a sealed bid email to everyone on the
Digest and SAC supporters in Mount Airy. All the details are listed on the
webpage, so I won't go into them here.
Please click the link and consider placing a bid - hopefully two lucky members
of WBMUTBB will have great vacations! I'll keep everyone updated on the status
in the coming week.

I've posted a good number of photos from Mayberry Days to the Surry Arts
Council website at
http://host29.ipowerweb.com/~surryart/main/displaypage.php?page=images/gallery/md04galleryindex.html
For my brief MD report, it certainly was a special weekend in Mount Airy and
always nice to see so many friends and meet new ones during the weekend. I
was pleased to have my parents come down and have the opportunity to meet my
"Mayberry family." They had a much better time than they ever imaged and
think they now have a better understanding of why I enjoy going to the
various TAGS events. I must again thank all the WBMUTBB members who helped
during the auction, making that the most successful one to date. Professor
Brower's Lecture continues to be my favorite event with great stories from
the Dillards and Maggie this year. It is one thing to know your trivia like
Pat, Dennis, and Johnny, but to hear the stories behind TAGS is always a
treat to me. The newest highlight was attending the "Mayberry Days Chapel"
at the amphitheatre on Sunday morning. LeRoy & Jan McNees lead a wonderful
service and hearing David Browning read the parable of the prodigal son
brought new meaning to the passage. Seeing Mrs. McGruder's cousin and the
creativity of the Barney Chapter with their still in the parade is what
makes the festival as good as it is (Amy - my mom says thank you for the
flower!). I have yet to catch up on my sleep, but have another year of
memories and it is all worth it.

This might sound crazy, but when I can't sleep, I often try to go down the
alphabet and think of TAGS characters for each letter - however, I'm stuck on Q
( other than Queenie the cat ) and U and W,X, Y and Z. In the interest of a
good night's sleep, can anyone help me?
