Today our homeschool field trip group was given a tour of a county jail. I
wouldn't go so far as to say that it was enjoyable, but it sure was
educational! The jail commander (that was a new title for me--never heard it
before) conducted the tour. She was very nice and helpful, but seeing a real
jail from the inside was pretty sobering. At the end as she was inviting
questions, I made the comment, "This isn't the Mayberry jail!"

"No, it sure isn't!" the jail commander replied.

Then another lady piped up with, "And there's no Barney Fife here, either."

The jail commander grinned and said, "Well...I wouldn't say that. But we don't
let him have even one bullet!"

It's nice to know that when you reference Mayberry, everybody knows what you're
talking about and can relate to it! It was helpful to have that touch of humor
at the end of a very serious tour.
